This is one of the more interesting ways to receive some 'free' or discounted services and make a few bucks while you're at it. Prior to accepting an assignment, there are a few things to consider...

Spoiler Alert: It's not Actually FREE

In exchange for working (checking the mystery shop company boards for assignments, reviewing the assignment requirements, investing round trip travel time to/from the business, taking the required photos, completing the report), you'll receive services and/or products.  You  will pay for them at the time of purchase and will be reimbursed later (which you'll then pay income tax on at the end of the year). Any payment that you receive is pre-tax and before expenses (fuel and wear and tear on your vehicle to/from the location [the IRS’s 2024 Standard Mileage Rate is 67 cents per mile], etc.)  You may also get a little pay in addition to the reimbursement.

But considering that minimum wage here in California is currently $16 ($20 if employed in Fast Food), generally speaking, there are other, more lucrative, means of earning available to people.

Having said this, many (most) mystery shops are not worth the time and financial investment required. But, there are the occasional 'Diamonds in the Rough'!  For example, an assignment may be worthwhile to someone if it involves products or service that they need or would normally purchase anyway (i.e. an oil change for their vehicle or a meal).  Plus, sometimes mystery shopping assignments can be fun!  Finally, an assignment that may be worthwhile to me may not be worthwhile to you and vice versa; the bottom line being you'll need to decide for yourself!  Still Intrigued?  Good, then read on...

Mystery Shopping

Here is a list of some of the 'top' mystery shopping companies that I have experience working with, and that I have a generally positive impression.  Due to the Independent Contract Agreements, I cannot name specific companies and the mystery shopping companies that are contracted to have them evaluated. But, based on my experiences, I can provide a generalized description of the type of shops that are available at the mystery companies.
